i spent wednesday morning with my niece, burnley. it’s one of my favorite things to do. we went to starbucks and drank our ‘big girl drinks’. i ate a blueberry muffin and she manhandled her cinnamon bun. when we were finished, i didn’t need the napkin i had grabbed for myself and she needed a hose. we talked about dora and how silly swiper the sneaky fox can be. we had a long discussion about how flowers bloom and agreed that jumping rope is totally underrated. it’s also good to build big muscles she reminded me, filling me with a sudden urge to dig out my jump rope. i wanted to pull out my camera. take pictures of her sticky hands carefully grasping her cup and capture her little nose completely covered in icing. but i didn’t. the bigger part of me just wanted to sit with her and hear about how she sees the world without being sidetracked by iso or shutter speed. after we were done, we went on a bear hunt and played a quick game of hide and seek in the flowering trees. then we walked over to the park where i had my camera in one hand and a napkin in the other. she got a rock in her shoe and so i set the napkin down to help a girl out. in complete horror, she lifted a finger and wagged it close to my nose. doo doo, you can’t put that on the ground, it is bery bad to be a glitterbug!
my heart stops momentary when i realize that i have a hand in raising this marvelous little creation.
